At the age of 8, Derek joined a local chess club alongside his friend. His interest began to snowball into passion as he began competing in various events, starting from scholastic events to eventually playing on international stages. Through hard work and support from family and coaches, Derek was able to quickly advance up the ranks, earning his National Master title shortly after his fifteenth birthday. Apart from his personal chess accomplishments, Derek has also helped and worked with others through Chess. He began his career as a coach in 10th grade where he has shared his love and passion for the game with numerous others.

Hello! I am Josiah Stearman. I am a 21-year old Grandmaster-Elect with a Bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics from the prestigious UC Berkeley and a Master's degree in Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia. I love watching and playing sports, but I love chess even more!

Rochelle started learning chess at the age of 5 by spectating games played between her father and her older brother Derek. Since then, Rochelle has had multiple notable achievements on the international stage, including medaling in two World Youth events, and being a part of the American National team.

Keaton Kiewra

Coach
Keaton Kiewra is a professional Chess Instructor. He is an International Master with two Grandmaster norms. Keaton grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska where he was the Nebraska State Chess Champion for nine consecutive years. He also won six National Scholastic Titles during that time. Keaton moved to Dallas in 2005 to attend University of Texas at Dallas on a Chess Scholarship. Since graduating in 2009, he has made his living as a full time Chess Instructor. Keaton is very proud to have some extremely successful students who have won National Scholastic Titles, represented the U.S. at World Youth Championship events, and been consistently ranked toward the top of their age group nationally.
